May 10 is annually observed as National Shrimp Day. Shrimps are among the most consumed seafood in the world for many reasons : shrimp are a good source of protein also a healthy one, packed with B vitamins, iron and omega-3’s. Shrimps are also packed with vitamin B12, Choline, and selenium, which helps support heart health, boost immunity and inflammation.
In 2016 according to FAO (2018), world aquaculture production (including aquatic plant cultivation) amounted to 110.2 million tons, of which crustaceans with a production of 7.9 million tons, shrimp production of about 5 million tons.
Among the major shrimp producing countries are India, Vietnam and Ecuador. In the case of Africa, shrimp production is estimated at a few tens of hundreds of tons.
The development of shrimp farming is gaining momentum in Africa as the promotion of this sector can contribute to the generation of employment, food security and poverty reduction.
